A psychoeducational evaluation includes measuring overall ability or aptitude for achievement, i.e., IQ; cognitive testing measures several key factors that we know are involved in academic achievement: verbal thinking and reasoning, visual-spatial reasoning, visual processing (learning from visual information); working memory; long-term retrieval; cognitive efficiency and processing speed.
The Psychoeducational evaluation or assessment also includes measures of achievement in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics and knowledge.
Within reading, writing and mathematics, basic skills, fluency (how efficiently one can process and produce material in each of these domains), and application to higher order processes, i.e., reading comprehension, math problem solving and written expression), are also measured.
Depending upon the nature of the referral, other areas may also be assessed, such as oral language understanding and expression, phonological processing, visual-motor integration, and executive functioning.
Information is also gathered about the individual’s birth, development, social, behavioral, and educational history. Because learning differences are often inherited, understanding one’s family history is also relevant, as is the understanding the individual’s personal strengths, interests, and talents that may or may not be associated with school learning.
